Foster Home Feedback

2/15/18 Volunteer Feedback:  I've had the pleasure of meeting Jake a few times while he has been at our facility.  Unfortunately, his foster is going out of town for training for a few months and so could no longer foster him.  We haven't been able to find a foster for him yet, but we are working on it!

Jake is such a great dog, very laid back and chill every time I interact with him.  He's pretty content just to hang out relax. Jake takes treats very nicely and is extremely well mannered. Jake doesn't pull much on the leash while walking. He still limps a bit from his hip surgery, but it doesn't seem to cause him much pain. He will bear weight on it while going potty and he sits down/lies down/gets up just fine.

One area we have been trying to learn more about Jake is his interaction with dogs. His previous foster didn't have any dogs and so we couldn't get a good read on him.  He has met some smaller dogs and done just fine, although there was a reactive female that he did not particularly care for.  Jake has met both of my female dogs (about 60 lbs each) and done great.   He isn't interested in playing at all - so if you are looking for a playmate for your dog, Jake is not the right fit.  He doesn't mind being around them and will sniff and say hi, but that is the extent of his interaction.  I think Jake would do best with docile dogs, and preferably smaller than him.

Both of my girls were not interested in playing with Jake and so just left him alone, which he appreciated. I had them freely roaming together for a good 20 minutes and he was great. He just laid down and watched them do their thing.

Jake really is a great dog and deserves a wonderful home. Please consider meeting this handsome boy!

2/3/18: Jake has finally been cleared and doesn't have cancer! He is well on his way to recovery but still needs to gain strength in his rear right leg. We have certain exercises that need to be done to help him build muscle and strength in that leg. He can get grumpy when it comes to doing them but with confidence and persistence, they can easily be done. Jake has come a long way and deserves to be in a home that he can call his own. He loves to lay on the couch and rest his head on you while nudging you to continue scratching him. The life of a dog!

1/1/18: I've had Jake for about 3 months now and he has truly been a chill, go with the flow kind of dog. He's potty trained and crate trained although I haven't crated him for a long while as he has shown that he's a perfect gentleman when left out. I'm always home and when I need to run errands or go anywhere I take him with me everywhere!  Jake loves going for car rides and he waits patiently for my return with safety always in mind of course. He did mark a few times when I first got him but never again afterward nor has he had any accidents. Jake brings his leash to me, goes to the door or taps it once with his paw to let me know he needs to go outside to do his business. He loves being outside and going for walks. He knows how to "sit", "stay", "down", and "come" (stubborn with "come" unless you have treats).

I've traveled to places as far as Tennessee and near as Minneapolis with him, along with running errands, groceries, appointments, etc. and he has always been an awesome pal to have around. Jake has stayed in hotels with me and my two-year-old son and is always well behaved. I did take that trust too far one day when I grabbed some food to go from a restaurant, left it in the front seat while I checked into the hotel, got back into my car and noticed it smelled teasingly delicious. Yep, you guessed right, the food had managed to disappear into what I imagined was one gulp! On the upside, there was no mess!  Jake is probably the most gentle dog when it comes to taking treats from your hand. He does get quite distracted and excited at the vet's so it takes a little more muscle power on my part but he's definitely won my heart as I'm sure he'll win yours. Sometimes I wonder if I'll be looking back at him thinking he's the one who got away.

Jake had FHO surgery on Dec. 27th to relieve the pain in his hip that is either caused by hip dysplasia or cancer. The vet is currently having it tested to rule out cancer, so fingers crossed that we're well on our way with his recovery and he can be in his forever home soon. If there's anything more you'd like to know about him please ask away.
